Braves fall in tough losses to Cavs

(Lagrange, GA) —  The Brave varsity basketball teams each suffered close, tough losses to region rival Callaway in Lagrange Wednesday night in weather make-up games.

A huge 3-point basket from senior Sage Kelley with under 10 seconds to play in regulation sent the Lady Braves to overtime before the Lady Cavs would pull out a 57-55 win.

The Lady Braves (5-13, 2-3) still remain in the hunt for a higher seed at the Region 5-AA tourney if they can bounce back versus the Columbus teams over the next three games.

The Lady Braves will host Jordan Friday night for Senior night before battling with Spencer in back to back games at home Saturday and on the road next Tuesday before closing out the regular season on Friday, February 2 versus region leading Lamar County.

The girls battled back from a 21-14 halftime deficit Wednesday night and led by as many as four in the fourth quarter.

Kelley led the scoring for Coach Helen Akins’ squad with 21 including 15 from long range.

Other scorers in the game included Tori Caldwell and Haley Bennett with eight apiece, Alexis Nelms with seven, Morgan Kay with five, and Sophia Long with four. Alexis Nelms scored all seven of her points in the final quarter including four of five from the free throw line.

In the boys’ game, Coach Keith Simmons and his squad also suffered a tough 68-64 setback in a contest that featured several big runs by both teams.

After trailing 23-10 midway through the second quarter, the Braves stormed back with a 28-5 run to take a 38-29 lead late in the third before Callaway responded with a run of their own.

Alijah Huzzie led the way for the Braves with 27 points including eight of 10 from the line. Other scorers included Will Hammett with 10, Tray Dunson with six, Komari Clark and Ethan Lawson with five, and Darius Matthews with three.

The Braves (4-15, 3-3) will also look to bounce back versus Jordan Friday night in Franklin. The Lady Braves will tip at 6:00 PM to be followed by the boys with Senior Night activities between games.
