Braves finish third at Area 4 Duals

3rd place Braves at Area 4 Duals Saturday (Front L-R): Anna Bailey, Gage Cannon, Franklin Jackson, Jartavious Thornton (Back L-R): Head Coach Kyle Yates, Kainnan Lindsey, Caleb Phillips, Thomas Alexander, Wyn Denney, Aidan Byrd, Logan Moran, Coach Brad Nixon

(Bremen, GA) — The Heard County High School wrestling team finished in third place at the Area 4 Dual meet held at Bremen High School Saturday, narrowly missing a slot at next weekend’s State Duals in Macon.

The Braves went 3-1 at the meet defeating Therrell, Temple, and McNair but a semifinal loss to eventual area runner-up Callaway kept the squad from advancing to state.

Bremen won the dual meet after taking down Callaway in the finals.

The Braves wrestled well but were hurt by being unable to field competitors in all weight classes.

Head coach Kyle Yates was proud of the squad and thinks the team and especially some individuals will do well moving forward to the traditional championships that get started next month.

“We started off slow and didn’t wrestle our best against Callaway but you know credit to them they did a good job,” Coach Yates said after the meet.  “We had a little meeting after the Callaway match and came out and wrestled better later on and I’m proud of how we finished out there today.”

Several Brave grapplers had solid efforts including Logan Moran, Gage Cannon, and Jartavious “J.T.” Thornton who each went undefeated at the meet.

Coach Yates feels he his squad has numerous individuals that have strong shots to advance to the traditional state meet in Macon in mid February.

“I feel like our whole team has a chance to make it through to sectionals and we have three or four guys that have a real shot to win at sectionals and compete for state titles in Macon,” added Yates.

Leading the way will be a pair of seniors that took medals in Macon last year.

Gage Cannon finished in third place in 2018 and will aim to become Heard High’s first ever individual state champion to close out a strong career. Cannon also earned a fifth place finish at state as a sophomore.

Logan Moran is another senior in the that could make some noise at state to follow up on his sixth place finish in 2018. Moran along with Cannon and Thornton were the only Braves to score pins versus Callaway.

Junior Wyn Denney scored pins over McNair and Temple but came up short on points dropping his match 13-6 versus the Cavs.

Kainnan Lindsay also had a nice day at the meet scoring pins over Temple and McNair. Franklin Jackson had a nice pin versus McNair in the third place match won 34-24 by the Braves and Caleb Phillips notched a solid pinfall win over Temple.

The 2018-2019 edition of the Brave wrestling team also features the first ever female wrestler in Heard County history — freshman Anna Bailey.

Anna does not compete against girls but was able to earn some forfeit points for the Braves Saturday against teams that could not fill her weight class.

This year’s traditional state meet will feature an all girls state title for the first time so Anna will be competing for that beginning with the sectional round.

The Braves will host 2-3 teams for Senior Night on January 23 and will compete at the Bowdon Tournament January 25-26 to tune up for the traditionals.

The Area Traditional Meet takes place at Bremen on February 1-2 and the sectionals will also take place at Bremen the following week on February 8-9.

The State Championships will be at the Centreplex in Macon February 13-16.
