(Bremen, GA) — The Braves varsity wrestling team traveled to Bremen Friday night and won the fourth place trophy at the Class AA Traditional Area 2 Wrestling Finals which featured individual competitors from eleven different schools from around the state.

Five Brave wrestlers scored top four finishes and will advance individually to next week’s GHSA State Sectional Meet which also takes place at Bremen.

The top Brave finisher on Friday was senior Matt Brown (220 pounds) who finished second after narrowly losing a 3-1 match to Dublin in the finals.

Brown seems to be in much better physical condition after battling some injuries earlier this season. He looks for another strong showing next week to earn a spot at the state finals where he finished as state runner-up one year ago, the top finish in Brave wrestling history.

“Brown is back to looking more like himself after that injury,” said head coach Kyle Yates after the meet. “It is so good to see him getting back into wrestling shape.”

Two Braves earned third place finishes Friday in Bremen. In the heavyweight class, senior Jacob Bishop took down a Bowdon opponent to earn his spot at next week’s sectionals.

“Bishop did a good job tonight. It is good to see him come back and beat the same Bowdon kid that beat him earlier in the season,” said Yates.

In the 113 pound class, yet another senior Devin Caito got a pin over Temple to earn his spot at next week’s meet. Senior Andrew Cannon finished fourth in the 195 pound class to advance.

One of the most impressive performances of the night came from Blake McAdams in the 138 pound weight class. McAdams scored his fourth place finish as only a freshman to earn another trip to Bremen next week.

Freshman Gage Cannon in the 145-pound class got a come from behind pin to earn fifth place in the final match of the night but may possibly advance next week due to an injury suffered by a Bowdon grappler earlier in the night. If the Bowdon wrestler is unable to compete next week, Gage would take over the fourth spot as the alternate.

Head coach Kyle Yates was pleased with the performance of all of his guys at the meet.

“Really proud of our five and possibly six guys that will be moving on,” Yates said. “I tell you Blake McAdams really stood out tonight — he has really progressed throughout the year. Cannon and Caito both wrestled real well tonight. Even my guys that didn’t make the top four I am so proud of their efforts and what they have done this year and I am looking forward to them coming back next year.”

Next week’s sectional meet will take place at the Bremen recreation department on Saturday and will feature the top competitors from 24 schools throughout the state.

Wrestler’s earning top four finishes in Bremen on Saturday will advance to the GHSA State Championships February 11-13 at the Infinite Energy Arena (former Gwinnett Arena) in Duluth. These wrestlers will experience one of the most memorable experiences in high school sports as they wrestle in front of literally thousands of spectators.
