Braves salvage game three on Hammett walk-off

(Franklin, GA) — The Brave baseball team was unable to capture a Region 5-AA Championship at Alford Field Friday but were able to finish the night with a bang after Will Hammett’s extra inning walk-off base hit gave the Braves a 9-8 win in the series finale.

The Cavaliers took game one 11-3 to garner first place in the region and as a result, the Braves will enter the GHSA Class AA playoff as the No. 2 seed when the postseason gets underway in two weeks.

Game two was a battle from start to finish before Hammett’s walk-off scored Tanner Collins to give the Braves their first win over the Cavs in about a decade.

Senior reliever A.J. Head was rewarded with the win after working some solid innings in all three games of the series.

Head allowed just two earned runs in seven plus innings while striking out eight batters.

Dale Thornhill and Tray Owens combined to toss the first seven innings.

Offensively, Owens launched his team high fourth homer of the year to go with two RBI’s and two runs scored.

Caden Raines and Collins also had nice games at the plate with two hits apiece and Bryan Jones added a double and two RBI’s.

Davey Raines had two hits in game one with Jones launching his third homer of the year to add to his team high RBI total of 27.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed and I know all the guys are too, but I’m proud of the way these guys picked themselves up in game two today,” said Brave head coach Trent Bianco. “It wasn’t pretty by any means but these guys continued to battle. We just have to continue to work and get better at the little things — we’ve got a good group that goes to work everyday.”

Despite the disappointing second place finish in the region, the season  is far from over as the Braves face four more non-region games next week before the state playoffs.

The Braves will host Handley this Tuesday at 5:30 PM in Franklin.

The Braves will host the No. 3 seed from Region 6-AA in a round one best-of-three State Playoff series beginning on April 26 with an if game to follow April 27 if necessary.
