Braves set to face Tigers in Region 5-AA Semis

(Franklin, GA) — The Heard County Braves will battle the Temple Tigers in the Region 5-AA semifinals this Thursday at 6:00 PM at Callaway High School in Lagrange.

The rubber match between the squads that split two regular season matchups will determine one of the teams that will play for a Region Championship Saturday night also at CHS.

Although the two teams share the same 5-3 records in region games this year, Temple will be the No. 2 seed after a Sunday coin-flip went the way of the Tigers.

The coin flip was basically a moot point with both teams meeting regardless of the outcome.

Top seed Callaway will face the winner of tonight’s No. 4 vs. No. 5 game between Bremen and Haralson County in Thursday’s other semifinal at 8:00 PM.

The Braves enter the region playoffs on a high note after knocking off Haralson County 61-39 Friday night in Franklin. Chance Curbow led the Braves with 11 points while 11 different Braves scored in the game.

Other scoring leaders included Ayden Cannon with eight, Jameer Cook with seven, and three Braves (Isaiah O’Neal, Jonathan Echols, and Ethan Lawson) who scored six points each.

O’Neal and Echols each had their first varsity dunks in Friday’s win.

The Braves fell to Temple on the road last week 55-34, but defeated the Tigers 50-48 earlier this season in Franklin.

The Braves are guaranteed a state playoff spot regardless of Thursday’s outcome, but a strong showing in the tournament could give Coach Derek Smith’s crew a much better seed versus Region 8-AA in the first round of the GHSA Class AA State Playoffs next week.

The Braves have played with heavy hearts over the past few games after Tydarius “Ty” Smith was hospitalized in ICU early last week with Multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C).

The junior Brave was moved out of ICU yesterday but faces a long hard recovery.
