Braves split weekend tilts with Villa Rica and Schley

(Franklin) — The Braves varsity baseball team split non-region match-ups with two Wildcat teams this weekend defeating Class AAAAA Villa Rica 13-3 on the road Friday night before falling 9-2 to the defending GHSA Class A Public State Champions Schley County at HHS Saturday afternoon.

The Braves jumped out to an early 6-0 lead over the Wildcats Friday night after two innings before coasting to the 13-3 final in seven innings.

Trey Alford got the win after pitching four innings while scattering six and hits and two walks.

The junior starter gave up three runs but all were unearned lowering his season ERA to just 0.87 over his three starts. Alford also helped himself at the plate driving in two runs.

Top performers offensively included Logan Ward with two hits, two RBI’s, and two runs scored and Chandler Polk with a triple and four RBI’s. Drew Blair, Tristan Brown, and Zack Hill each stole bases.

Seniors Polk and Carl Lipford pitched well in relief combining to toss three innings and allowing no runs.

The Braves struggled offensively Saturday versus the Schley County senior pitcher Brett Usry.

Usry allowed the Braves just one hit and four walks while giving up two unearned runs over five innings. Usry also went 4-for-4 at the plate while Chase Patrick homered and drove in four.

Catcher Tristan Brown continues to lead the Braves in hitting with a .571 batting average through the first eight games of the season and 12 runs scored. Polk leads the team in RBI’s with 11.

The Braves dropped a 14-5 game to Class AA private school Pace Academy on Tuesday. Brown, Polk, and Ethan Brant each had two base hits in the loss.

“We are better than how we are playing — we have got to play better,” said Coach Trent Bianco after Saturday’s loss. “Ultimately, that falls on me in getting  us ready and I will take responsibility for it but we have gotten a lot of guys back and we are never going to use injuries as an excuse. We will come out next week and keep working and get this thing going in the right direction.”

“That was the disappointing thing was we swung it real well and probably played our best game of the year at Villa Rica and just couldn’t carry it over to today against Schley.”

The Braves have two short road trips this week with games at Central on Tuesday (5:45 PM) and Callaway (5:30 PM) on Friday.
