Braves Upended by Cavs

(Lagrange, GA) — The Braves were unable to overcome a three touchdown halftime deficit to a strong Callaway squad in Lagrange Friday night dropping their second game of the season by a final score of 49-20 at Callaway Stadium.

After two quick touchdowns in the first quarter by Callaway the game was halted for about 45 minutes for a lightning delay with under a minute to play in the opening quarter although no rain ever materialized.

The delay seemed to refocus the Braves who came back out of the locker room and scored two quick touchdowns to tie the score at 14-14. Senior Duranta Dunson rushed in both scores the first from 22 yards and the second a highlight reel worthy haul from 58 yards with the back breaking several would be Cavalier tackles.

The second TD was set up by a touchback kickoff by Collin Nutt and a nice stop on downs by the defense which forced a rare Callaway punt.

The momentum swing did not last long as 5-star recruit Terry Godwin carried the ensuing kickoff coast to coast to give the Cavs a 21-14 lead.

The Cavs defense held the Braves on the next drive forcing a punt. After a nice 46 yard punt by sophomore Ethan Brant the Cavs scored again to extend the lead to 27-14.

The Braves attempted to put together one last drive before halftime but a fumble led to another quick score for the Cavs who led 35-14 at the half.

Hunter Lane made a nice play to recover a Cavs fumble early in the third quarter but the Braves offense was unable to capitalize.

Lots  of young players saw time in the second half and Brant wrapped up the Braves scoring with a TD late in the game.

The Cavaliers hold onto the Pulpwood Classic trophy for the second consecutive year.

The Braves (0-2) will return home to Staples Stadium this Friday night where they will host another AAA school, the South Atlanta Hornets (1-1) with a kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

  1. I am not giving up on my Braves. They are very young this year and have a lot of players that need more Varsity playing time to mature. They are also working things out Defensively so that they have a playoff ready defense. Coach Barron could have chosen an easy schedule as many others have . But at the end of the day , what matters is how competitive your team is come playoff time. Go Braves !!
