(Franklin, GA) — Qualifying for a special election in the City of Franklin ended at noon today with only one candidate qualifying for each available position.

For the City Mayor position, recent acting Mayor and Post 3 Councilmember Kevin Hayes was the lone qualifier.

Barring the emergence of a write-in candidate coming forward during the next seven days, Hayes will be sworn into office as the new Mayor at some point after that.

Hayes officially resigned from his council position prior to qualifying for the Mayor’s seat meaning Mayor Pro-Tem Cindy Putzek will be the acting Mayor of Franklin until the point that Hayes can officially be sworn in to office.

Hayes will replace beloved Mayor Joel Rogers who passed away on February 23 after a tough battle with cancer.

If no other write-in candidates come forward for the Post 3 City Council seat, Charles Israel will also soon be sworn in as a new City Councilman for Post 3.

Israel was the lone qualifier to fill the seat being vacated by Hayes.

No election will be required unless a write-in candidate comes forward during the next seven days.

The next Franklin City Council meeting is currently scheduled for May 7. If necessary, election day would be on June 9, 2020 at City Hall.

The qualifying took place this week at Franklin City Hall under the supervision of City Elections Supervisor Karen Boyd.
