BREAKING NEWS: Man drowns trying to save father on West Point Lake

(Troup County, GA) — The Memorial Day turned tragic in Troup County Monday when a man drowned in West Point Lake.

Troup County authorities recovered the body of a 34-year-old Jeremiah Israel of Jonesboro who drowned while trying to save his father.

Deputies were were initially called to West Point Lake under the Cameron Mill Road bridge regarding a possible drowning.

Reports indicate the man’s 64-year-old father accidentally fell off his boat and into the water while the boat was tied under the bridge. Jeremiah Israel then jumped into the water in an attempt to save his father.

The tragedy was witnessed by some other boaters who immediately went to help and were able to successfully pull the father from the water. He was later transported to WellStar West Georgia for treatment and released. Unfortunately, the boaters were unable to pull the son from the water.

TCSO and Georgia DNR Rangers recovered Israel’s body at around 10:47 AM. The Yellow Jacket Boat Ramp was closed during the search and recovery effort.
