Randolph County deputy shot, suspect dead after hostage situation

(Randolph County, AL) — A Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputy is expected to recover after suffering two gunshot wounds earlier today near the Swagg Cove area of Lake Wedowee.

The suspect is dead following a hostage situation, Randolph County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Larry Clarke said. The hostage is reportedly unharmed according to reports.

The man set fire to his son’s yard, house and car, and also allegedly killed his son’s dog.

He then fled into a camper on County Road 7 where he reportedly held the hostage.

The suspect is believed to have been armed with a handgun and a rifle inside the camper. Unconfirmed reports indicate the hostage may be the suspect’s wife.

The standoff ended just after 5:00 PM CST.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the State Bureau of Investigation, Oxford Police Department, Oxford SWAT and Heflin Police Department responded to the area after the shooting.

Emergency services set up a command center up the road from the scene at Bethel West Baptist Church on County Road 7 in Wedowee and firefighters blocked County Road 121 at U.S. 431.
