(Franklin, GA) — The James Stewart Chapter recognized the Heard County High School Class of 2017 DAR Good Citizen Matthew Levens on Saturday, February 11th.

The DAR Good Citizen Award is a national award intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.

The program is open to all senior class students enrolled in accredited public or private secondary schools that are in good standing with their state boards of education. United States citizenship is not required.

The student selected as the school’s DAR Good Citizen must exhibit the following qualities: Dependability (which includes truthfulness, loyalty, and punctuality); Service (which includes cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others); Leadership (which includes personality, self-control, and ability to assume responsibility); and Patriotism (which includes unselfish interest in family, school, community, and nation) to an outstanding degree.

The winner is selected by his/her peers – the members of the senior class.

The DAR Good Citizen Award ceremony was held in the conference room at Three Rivers at 11 AM.

Regent Carla Brown welcomed the guests and gave a brief overview of the DAR and its objectives. She explained the DAR Good Citizen Award and congratulated Matthew on being selected by his fellow students to receive this award.

She then presented the 2017 DAR Good Citizen Award Certificate signed by the NSDAR President General, Ann Turner Dillon.

After explaining the symbolism of the Good Citizen pin, Regent Brown presented Matthew his pin, membership card, and an award $150 check.

This year a local business made a donation to our chapter for the Good Citizen winner that allowed the chapter to present Matthew the extra $100. The James Stewart Chapter is pleased to have such wonderful local support for our youth.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, members and visitors enjoyed refreshments and fellowship.

Attendees were Matthew Levens, his grandparents Tilman and Vicki Levens, his girlfriend Storm Thompson, Sandi Allen, Anne Noles, Julia Saint, Emily Rogers, Pam Lyle, Jane Barker, Sharon Frost, Carla Brown, Beverly Baker, Bonnie Baker, Marifaythe Whitley, Mindy Runyan, Kayla Runyan, Melba Templeton, Mary Lane, Tee Davis, Elaine Jarrett, Sherry White, Paige Harrod, and Judy Miller.
