Freshman southpaw leads No. 5 Braves over No. 4 Rockmart

(Franklin, GA) — A strong outing from a rookie pitcher and a key base hit from a senior helped lead the Heard County Braves to a 2-1 win over Rockmart at Alford Field Monday.

Starting pitcher Kellon Rollings earned his first career varsity win while leading the No. 5 ranked Braves to the big win over the No. 4 ranked Yellow Jackets. The freshman hurler gave up just five hits and one walk over five innings allowing just one earned run and striking out three.

Pitching was the story of the game for the Braves with Dale Thornhill pitching a scoreless sixth inning and Tray Owens closing the door in the seventh while striking out two to earn his first save of the season.

Offensively, the key blow came on a clutch two-out two RBI double from senior right fielder Tanner Collins to give the lead for good to the home team.

Rockmart’s lone run came in the top of the third.

Owens had two base hits and was the only Brave to finish the game with multiple hits.

Leroy Marsh had a nice day with a hit, run scored, and a stolen base.

Head coach Trent Bianco was very pleased to see the Braves (2-2) bounce back strong from two early season losses.

“I’m definitely very proud of these guys. Rockmart has some good arms and they play well defensively so this was a good win,” said Bianco following the win.

“Kellon pitched very well and Tanner came through with the big hit. This should give us some good momentum heading into the next week as we get ready for Bremen in our region opener in a couple of weeks.”

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday as part of a three team triple-header but was cancelled due to weather and field conditions. The Braves are scheduled to finish out the week with three road games.

The Braves travel to Troup County Thursday (5:55 PM) and then play two versus Villa Rica (12:30 PM) and Central of Carrollton (3:00 PM) at Villa Rica on Saturday.
