(Newnan, GA) — The Heard County Elementary School Academic Bowl team traveled to Elm Street Elementary in Newnan last week after earning a spot in the 2020 West Georgia RESA finals.

The team competed well winning two of three matches and finished in a tie for ninth place with 500 total points.

The squad coached by Loretta Shaw and Sheri Phillips had a strong season scoring 2420 points overall and only lost two individual matches all season.

Although both head-to-head losses during the season came to Hogansville Elementary, the Braves did manage to finish 20 points ahead of the Greenwave at the finals.

HCES defeated the Northside and Canongate teams from Coweta in the other two finals matches.

“This was another great Academic Bowl season,” said Coach Shaw after the finals. “This group of students were very competitive and worked hard all season often coming from behind for the win. We won 10 out of 12 rounds! Job well done!”

A host of friends and family members as well as HCES Principal Paul Mixon were in attendance for the finals at Elm Street.

After the meet the students enjoyed dinner at Culver’s restaurant in Newnan to celebrate an outstanding season.

The hosts of the finals meet, Elm Street, were named champions with 680 points to just edge out second place Bremen (673 points) and third place Central of Carrollton (671 points).

The event included 16 elementary schools from Heard, Coweta, Carroll, Harris, Meriwether and Troup counties as well as Carrollton City Schools.

The schools all participate in academic bowl competitions in the West Georgia RESA-sponsored Academic Team Program.
