HCMS going virtual this week after multiple reports of COVID-19

(Franklin, GA) — The Heard County School System announced Friday that the Heard County Middle School is dealing with multiple cases of COVID-19.

The outbreak has HCMS transitioning to virtual classes for at least one one week beginning Monday.

Students at heard High and the three Heard County Elementary Schools will return to their respective campuses tomorrow following the Thanksgiving week holiday.

The school district issued the following statement via email and social media Friday afternoon regarding the situation at HCMS:

“Over the past few days, Heard County School System officials have been made aware of several new active COVID 19 cases at Heard County Middle School. Currently, HCMS has 14 active cases. This is an increase of 13 since the last day of school on November 20th. After much thought and consultation with the Department of Public Health, Heard County Middle School will switch to virtual learning for the week of November 30th. All middle school students will be expected to work online through their Google Classroom accounts those five days. Students who do not have internet access, please contact the school at 706-675-9247 in order to make arrangements. ALL other schools in the district will resume normal operations on Monday, November 30th.” ~ Heard County School System

While the school is reporting the outbreak, daily numbers issued by the Georgia Department of Health have yet to show a large spike in cases countywide.

(NOTE: There is typically a lag in reporting time of cases by the GDPH)

The Georgia Department of Public Health Daily Status Report released Sunday afternoon indicates 25 cases have been reported during the last two weeks in Heard County bringing the overall case count in Heard to 289 since the outbreak began.

It is important to note that reporting of both cases and deaths lag behind the actual time the positive test results occur and the deaths take place.

The State of Georgia has reported 420,601 confirmed cases and 8,778 deaths with COVID-19 since the outbreak began.

The Heard County Health Department is offering FREE drive-thru COVID-19 test each Monday between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Pre-Registration is strongly recommended. Visit for more information and to make an appointment.

Stay tuned to for further COVID-19 updates as they become available.
