(Franklin, GA) — The Heard County High School weightlifting team captured the area crown during the area meet hosted by the Braves Thursday at HCHS.

The team will next travel to Jefferson High School in Louisville, GA on Saturday, March 16 where they will look to secure yet another State Championship.

The Braves have been at the head of the class of the GACA state competition recently winning the state title in 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2018 while earning state runner-up finishes in 2015 and 2017.

Leading the way for the Braves Thursday were three area champions: Zaylin Wood, David Wilkins, and Ashton Bonner.

In the heavyweight division (246 and up), Wood not only brought home the top spot but lifted the most total weight at 730 pounds. The Braves dominated the heavyweights with Jacob “Big Kountry” Stephens earning second place and Jaidan Cameron claiming third.

The event is broken down into 10 weight classes and scored based on the power clean and the bench press lifts. Individuals who place in the top six in each class score team points which determined the area champs.

David Wilkins, a senior, earned his area championship in the 161-170 pound weight class. Wilkins continues to impress in the sport after claiming the 2018 State Title in the 151-160 pound class.

Sophomore Ashton Bonner brought home his area title in the 140U weight class and will look to win his first state title at Jefferson County in two weeks.

Other lifters scoring strong point finishes at the area meet were Aidan Byrd (3rd/ 140U), Tae Gray (3rd/ 140U), Duncan Googe (6th/ 141-150), Jakab Moon (2nd/ 151-160), Alijah Huzzie (6th/171-180), Tray Dunson (4th/181-190), Riley Diedrich (6th/181-190), Andrew Leak (2nd/191-205), Michael Cheney (3rd/191-205), Micaiah Austin (5th/191-205), Sam Brown (2nd/206-225), Kerry Scarborough (6th/226-245), and Quay Thornton (7th/226-245).
