Jackets edge Braves on walk-off

(Calhoun, GA) — The varsity Braves baseball team traveled to Calhoun Saturday afternoon for a tilt with Class AAA Yellow Jackets.

The Braves were looking for their first win of the season against the Jackets and came very close before falling on a walk-off base hit in the bottom of the last inning.

Coach Trent Bianco’s squad led 3-1 entering the seventh before the Jackets struck for three including the walk-off single from junior Tanner Gallman.

Junior Trey Alford was outstanding as the Brave starter tossing six plus innings while allowing just two earned runs with three hits and two walks. Alford also had a nice day at the plate with two hits including a double and an RBI.

Senior catcher Tristan Brown is off to a scorching start at the plate with seven hits in only eight at-bats over the first three games of the season. He was 2-for-2 Saturday with two hits and two walks.

The Braves look to get back on track in the Handley tournament this week weather permitting. The Braves are scheduled to face Handley on Tuesday (6:30 PM EST) and Valley, AL on Saturday (1:30 PM EST) although the forecast for Tuesday’s game looks bleak.

GAC 8, Braves 4

The Braves fell to Greater Atlanta Christian 8-4 on the road Friday night. Tristan Brown was 3-for-3 from the lead-off spot in that contest with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI.

Keagan Spradlin started the game allowing one run and one base hit in three innings pitched while striking out five and walking four.

Senior Carl Lipford pitched in long relief scattering six hits and striking out three in 2.2 innings.

JV Braves 6, Callaway 4

The junior varsity Braves started their season with a nice 6-4 home win over Callaway Thursday afternoon.

Leading the way at the plat were Payton Caldwell, Tanner Collins, and Trey Owens who each had two base hits. Collins had two RBI’s while A.J. Head, Dale Thornhill, and Will Hammett each had one.

Caldwell started the game allowing no earned runs in two innings while striking out four.

Bryan Jones and Davey Raines also pitched well in the win. Jones struck out five and Raines struck out four. Neither allowed an earned run.

AJ Head came on for the save striking out two in a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

JV Braves 11, Calhoun 7

The JV Braves’ offense unloaded for seven runs in the top of the sixth for the impressive road win over the Yellow Jackets.

8th-grader Dale Thornhill had a monster day leading Coach Ryan Duffey’s squad with three hits and four RBI’s.

Tray Owens had a big day with two hits and two RBI’s while Payton Caldwell also had two hits and an RBI from the lead-off spot.

Davey Raines, Jake Harrod, and AJ Head also had an RBI each.

Collin Wright was the winning pitcher and Bryan Jones got the save. The JV Braves are scheduled to face Handley at home Monday (5:00 PM) weather permitting.
