Labor Day Tragedy: Two children drown at West Point Lake

(Lagrange, GA) — Authorities say two children reportedly drowned Sunday in Troup County.

In a press release issued, the Troup County Sheriff’s Office state both children were 12 years old.

One boy and one girl, went into West Point Lake at Earl Cook Beach around 4:15 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Witnesses report the two went underwater while swimming and did not resurface.

Deputies and dive teams, as well as crew members of Troup County Fire and EMS searched the lake for about three hours to try and find the children, before eventually recovering their bodies in the lake Sunday around 7:30 p.m.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the US Army Corp of Engineers, and the LaGrange Police Department also helped in the search for the two children’s bodies.

Officials say the children were from Atlanta, visiting West Point Lake with family.

“Sheriff James Woodruff and the Troup County Sheriff’s Office extents our thoughts and prayers to the families as they mourn the loss of these two children,” added the release.

    • Wow! Don’t make sense! 1st…I’m so sorry to the family’s for their tragic loss! I can’t even imagine! And 2nd…I’m so curious to how this happened and I’m sure the family is also…hope there’s answers soon. God Bless
