Lady Brave Softball Players Honored with Postseason Awards

(Franklin, GA) — The Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) recently named several Heard County High School Lady Braves to their 2019 Class AA All-State softball team.

Leading the way were four players who were named to the first team including pitcher Katelyn Jiles, outfielder Beth Taylor, catcher Mackenzie White, and shortstop Emma Helton.

Senior Katelyn Jiles was honored after her stellar season on the mound for Coach Matt Hornsby’s squad that earned an Elite 8 appearance at the State Tournament in Columbus.

Jiles put up impressive pitching stats during her senior campaign compiling a record of 18-5 with one save and an ERA of just 2.64.

She was the workhorse of the pitching staff, tossing 132+ innings and her control was excellent as she allowed just 23 walks while striking out 81 opposing hitters.

Junior Beth Taylor, one of the leaders on the Lady Braves squad earned her first team all-state accolade after another solid season manning right field for the Lady Braves.

She batted .400 for the season with five homers, 28 RBI’s, and two triples while crossing the plate 26 times.

Behind the plate, sophomore Mackenzie White was selected first team all state after a phenomenal season both offensively and defensively.

White batted .519 with eight homers, 35 RBI’s, and 13 doubles. White struck out just four times on the season — a team best.

Emma Helton had another stellar season that resulted in her first team GACA All-State selection.

The speedy sophomore lead-off hitter lead the team with a .533 batting average with three triples, 14 walks, and a team high 51 runs scored. Her speed was a huge asset all season long as she stole 24 bases and was never thrown out.

Sophomore Janiyah Strong earned a second team honor on the All-State squad with big power numbers once again to follow up on her strong freshman season. Strong batted .424 with eight homers and a team high 45 RBI’s with 34 runs scored and 11 steals.

DP utlility player Brittany Graley was named as an honorable mention All-State player following a senior season where she batted .354 with eight doubles and 19 RBI’s. She also tallied four stolen bases in five attempts.

All six of the all-state Lady Braves were named to the Region 5-AA first team for the season as were Outfielder Tori Caldwell and utility base runner Chasity Kates.

Caldwell’s senior season was highlighted by a .316 average with 23 runs scored and 16 steals while serving as the outfield anchor in centerfield.

Kates, the only freshman on the varsity roster this season, batted .417 with 24 runs scored and 11 steals.

Senior Hannah Holden, senior Caroline Jones, sophomore Abigail Lathrop, and sophomore Zekylah Boyd were each named second team All-Region 5-AA while junior Alyssa Hall was selected as an honorable mention.
