Lady Brave Tennis moves to 8-1

(Franklin, GA) — The varsity Brave tennis teams will be in action at HHS both today and tomorrow as the regular season continues.

The male and female squads coached by Blake Alford and Lindsay Stewart will host rival Bowdon today (4:00 PM) and Region 5-AA foe Spencer on Thursday (4:00 PM).

The Lady Braves have continued to shine over the past two weeks especially in region action where they are 2-0 on the season.

The girls defeated Callaway 5-0 last week with top singles players Melissa Collins, Makayla Red, and Laurel Roberts each winning handily as well as the doubles teams comprised of No. 1 Alexis Nelms and Katelyn Smith and No. 2 Macie Taylor and Juliann Carpenter.

The girls also defeated Mount Zion 5-0 on Monday.

The squad has faced many matches over the last week including participating in the storied Granger Invitational tournament this past weekend.

After falling to Lumpkin County in the opening round of the tourney, the ladies bounced back with 3-2 wins over Harris County and North Paulding.

No. 3 singles player Laurel Roberts was crucial to both wins including a gutsy 13-11 tiebreaker win to clinch the North Paulding match Saturday morning.

The girls are in the midst of an impressive regular season with an overall record of 8-1.

The young and less experienced boys’ team is now 5-4 in the regular season including 1-1 in region play.

The squad defeated Callaway 4-1 last week behind wins from singles players Garrett Callahan, Jordan Cornelius, and Thad Higgins along with a doubles win by the duo of Ethan Hahn and Dave Dunn. The boys also defeated Mount Zion 5-0 on Monday.

The guys lost both matches at the Granger Invitational to talented teams from Allatoona and Lumpkin County.

The tennis teams will celebrate the senior players next Monday when they host Central before hitting the road for the final three regular season matches at Lamar County, Bowdon, and Newnan.

HHS will host the Region 5-AA tournament on April 10 in Franklin. For more information and updates on Brave tennis visit Heard County High School Tennis on Facebook.
