Lady Braves notch two holiday tourney wins

(Franklin, GA) — The Heard County Lady Braves are playing well during the holiday break after scoring two solid wins at the Ola High School Christmas Showcase in McDonough, GA this weekend.

The first win came by a final score of 42-37 over the hosting Ola Mustangs Friday. The second win came Saturday afternoon with a hard-fought 48-47 over win over fellow Class AA opponent South Atlanta from Region 6-AA.

The two wins give the Lady Braves a four game winning streak after a slow 1-6 start to the season.

Junior Hermonie Garza was the shero in Saturday’s close win scoring the game-winning bucket with about 10 seconds to play in the game.

She also scored a season high 14 points, just three short of her career-high 17.

Freshman Jasmine Owens also scored 14 and hauled down 10 rebounds for the double-double while senior Morgan Kay likewise had a big game with 13 points including three big baskets from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter.

The contest was tight throughout with the Lady Braves trailing by three at the half before tying the game at 34-34 after the third quarter.

Zekylah “Z” Boyd scored four points and tallied five rebounds.

In Friday’s win over Ola, it was senior Tori Caldwell leading the way with 10 points while Owens again led the way on the glass with nine rebounds.

Other top scorers included Garza with nine, Sophia Long with seven, Kay with six, and Owens with five.

The Lady Braves (5-6) will close out the showcase Monday afternoon with a 1:00 PM game versus a strong Eastside squad (9-3) from Class AAAA.

“I’m super proud of these girls, we were very disciplined toward the end of the game Friday which we needed to be,” said Coach Helen Akins.

“We didn’t shoot it that well, but our press worked really good. We just out-hustle people a lot of times and I will take that all day long. We also did a good job of boxing out and keeping them off the boards.”

Akins says she likes playing tournament games after Christmas day to help the squad get ready for the region games that always follow in January.

The rebuilding Brave men’s team fell 82-38 to a very talented and undefeated Lagrange Granger team Friday night in the Granger Classic at Lagrange High School.

Isaiah O’Neal led the scoring for the Braves with nine points while Ayden Cannon, Ty Smith, and Khalil Cofield each scored eight.

The Braves will look to close out the tourney on a high note when they face Flint River Academy at 4:30 PM Monday afternoon back at LHS.

The girls and boys will be back in important Region 5-AA action this Friday night when they host the Bremen Blue Devils at HCHS. The girls will tip at 6:00 PM followed by the boys at 7:30 PM.
