Lady Braves shut out Cavs

(Franklin, GA) — The Lady Braves moved to 2-0 in Region 5-AA play Wednesday at HHS with an 8-0 shut out win over Callaway in a make-up contest due to a rain out last week.

The Lady Braves (5-5, 2-0) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back.

Starting pitcher Sydney Gay earned the win after tossing five innings and striking out four. Katelyn Jiles pitched the final inning in the game that was called via run rule during the sixth inning.

Lora Glover drove home the walk-off run with a bases-loaded single to end the game.

Glover, Brittany Graley, and Hannah Holden each had two hits to lead the offense.

Alyssa Hall and Marissa Garza were the big run producers with two RBI’s each and Alexus Crawford scored twice.

Senior Brittany Scarborough stole two bases and scored a run.

Coach Matt Hornsby was pleased with the solid win in region play.

“The Callaway pitcher came out throwing hard and looked much better than she has in year’s past — seeing that kind of pitching will help us in the long run,” said Coach Matt Hornsby after the game.

“I was also proud to see our defense stepping up today — I think we only had one error and it would have been a tough play to make anyway. Sydney continues to throw as good as she has all year and Katelyn Jiles is also looking like a No. 1.”

The Lady Braves will compete at the Carrollton Tournament this weekend (Friday, 6:45 PM versus Flowery Branch and Saturday, 3:15 PM versus Pepperell) before returning to HHS to host Villa Rica on Monday (5:30 PM).

Next Tuesday, the squad travels to Lamar County for perhaps the biggest Region 5-AA game of the season.
