Lady Braves split versus Panthers, Warriors

(Woodstock, GA) — The Lady Braves traveled to Woodstock, GA Saturday to take on the Class AA Union County Panthers and the Class AAAAAAA Cherokee Warriors at the Twins Creek Softball Complex.

The Lady Braves earned a 6-2 win over the 2A Panthers in game one before falling 9-3 to the 7A Warriors in game two.

Freshman LilyRae Fulford took the mound and earned the complete game win over the Panthers. In her seven innings of work, Fulford scattered eight hits and walked just one hitter.

Junior Lady Brave Abigail Lathrop had four hits Saturday in Woodstock

Offensively, junior first baseman Abigail Lathrop and junior second baseman Zekylah Boyd led the way with three hits apiece.

Lathrop went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and three runs scored while Boyd went 3-for-4 with two steals and an RBI.

Senior outfielder Beth Taylor also had a nice effort with two hits including a double.

Catcher Mackenzie White hit a solo homer, and Janiyah Strong drove home two runs in the win.

Strong, Courtney Cannon, and Emma Helton each tallied two hits in the loss to the Warriors.

Head Coach Matt Hornsby found some positives and some negatives in the matchups versus two good teams.

“We saw very good competition there in both games today. We got to see Union’s No. 1 and she gave us a lot of trouble early on but I thought our girls did a good job of adjusting as the game went on. They had some really good swings and it is easy to see why they are ranked in the top 10,” said Hornsby.

“Against Cherokee, we’ve got to have a better mentality. We have to know we can’t score seven or eight runs against every team we face and even if we don’t win that game it has to be closer — but that is why we schedule tough games like that so we can learn and improve,” added Hornsby.

The Lady Braves will return to Region 5-AA action at Heard High today as they host rival Callaway. The Lady Braves edged the Lady Cavs 4-3 in the first meeting in Lagrange on September 1.

Now ranked at No. 2 in Class AA, the Lady Braves will travel to East Coweta Wednesday to meet Class AAAAAAA’s No. 1 ranked Indians.
