Lady Braves streak through Bama

(Roanoke, AL) — The Lady Braves ran through Alabama this weekend earning two more wins to run their season record to 8-2 and extend the current winning streak to five games.

After mauling the Randolph County Tigers for the second straight time 67-13 on Friday night, Coach Helen Akins’ group returned to Alabama Saturday afternoon to face off with the Handley Tigers and got another easy win by a final score of 53-36.

The Lady Braves led by just seven at the half before opening it up in the third quarter.

The uber consistent senior Kimberly Harris again led the scoring with 22 points.

Hannah Sanders also reached double-digits with 10 points and Ally Harris produced one of her best offensive games of the year with nine points including a 3-point basket. Emily Iddins and Haley Bennett each added four points.

“We’re just trying to work on the little things and get better and better so we can prepare for region play after Christmas break,” said Coach Akins after the game.

“I just think we are a little bit away from going from a good team to a pretty good team and from there we can just keep building on it, but there are some fundamental things that we need to keep drilling and working on to get us to that next level.”

Akins thinks a young sophomore coming off the bench has been a big help early in the season.

“Haley Bennett just comes in unafraid and penetrates and attacks the basket,” added Akins. “She plays good defense and she has been a real reliable person we can pull off the bench to get our starters some rest.”

The Lady Braves (8-2) return to the home court Tuesday night where they will host a formidable Troup County (3-2) squad from Class AAAA at 6 PM.

The important Region 5-AA schedule gets underway on January 2 at Callaway.
