Lady Braves win big at Temple

(Temple, GA) — The Lady Braves scored another big Region 5-AA win Saturday at Temple to set up an important road rematch at Bremen tomorrow night.

The Lady Braves knocked off the Tigers 54-18 Saturday afternoon in a game that was moved up to a noon start to avoid the inclement weather that arrived in the West Georgia area Saturday evening.

For the second straight game, sophomore Zekylah Boyd led the Lady Braves in scoring with 17 points while Jasmine Owens had another solid effort with 10 and Sophia Long scored eight points.

A couple of Lady Braves also came off to the bench with solid efforts including junior Briana Labaff who scored six points all coming in the fourth quarter.

Young freshman Brooklyn Curbow scored her first ever varsity points with a 3-point basket late in the game.

The win moves the season record for Coach Helen Akins’ squad to 5-1 and 8-8 overall following the first of two match-ups versus each region foe.

The lone loss came to the Bremen Lady Blue Devils whom the team will meet in Bremen Tuesday night.

Bremen shares the same 5-1 region record and an 8-10 mark overall.

Bremen’s region loss came 60-46 at the hands of the same Lamar County team that the Lady Braves knocked off Friday night in Franklin — the lone region loss for the Trojans.

The three teams are vying for an important top seed in the Region 5-AA tournament that will decide not just the teams that will got to the Class AA State Playoffs, but the seedings as well.

The Region 5-AA tournament will be played at the top seeded boys’ team in Region 5-AA this year.

In boys’ action at Temple Saturday, the Braves fell to a strong Tiger squad by a final score of 56-38. Newcomer sophomore D.J. Herring led the team with 10 points while Ayden Cannon scored nine, Khalil Cofield eight, and Ike O’Neal finished with six points.

The games at Bremen tomorrow night will tip off with the girls at 6:00 PM followed by the boys at 7:30 PM. The teams return home Friday for big rivalry rematches with Callaway at HCHS.
