Middle Braves Capture 2015-2016 RESA Championship

(Newnan, GA) — The Heard County Middle School Academic Bowl team captured the 2015-2016 West Georgia RESA District Academic Bowl Championship Monday afternoon.

The final and deciding meet of the year took place at Arnall Middle School in Newnan.

The West Georgia RESA Champion was determined through aggregate scoring of all four meets held this year.

The Braves won the first meet at Bremen Middle School on October 26 with 530 points and the second meet on January 11 at East Coweta with 690 points. Carrollton Middle School took first place at the Manchester meet on February 1 and Lee Middle School scored highest at Monday’s meet.

When the overall season results were tallied, the Braves finished as season Champions with an average of 555 points per meet.

Lee Middle School finished in overall second place with Bremen in third and Carrollton in fourth.

2015-2016 HCMS Academic Bowl team members include Samuel Forrester, McKorey Smith, Brianna Hill, Ethan May, Gavin Moncus, Nate Pike, Maggie Googe, and captain Michael Payton.

The championship for the middle Braves is especially impressive considering that HCMS competed with the bigger schools as well as the smaller schools.

The West Georgia RESA district includes teams school systems in Carroll County, Carrollton City, Coweta County, Harris County, Heard County, Meriwether County and Troup County.

The HCMS Academic Bowl team is coached by Lou Ann Hood and Melissa Googe.

Sixth graders Nate Pike, Brianna Hill, and Ethan May were also members of last year’s championship elementary team.

This year’s elementary school academic bowl team coached by Loretta Shaw and Sheri Phillips competed in their finals on Thursday, March 25 at Willis Road Elementary school in Newnan.

It was the fifth straight season the elementary Braves had reached the final meet. The West Georgia RESA elementary academic bowl district includes more almost 50 schools. Canongate Elementary School took home this year’s big trophy at that meet.

The HES team coached by Sheri Phillips and Loretta Shaw this season was composed of Mayah Jones, Marybeth Brown, Hannah Wright, Kaci Bates, Rylan Pickens, Cameron Wilkins, Colton Bates, Will Alford (captain), Daniel Turner, and Tommy Googe.
