Mr. Charles Henry Avery

Mr. Charles Henry Avery, age 79, of Franklin passed away March 16, 2019.

Funeral services for Mr. Avery will be conducted Wednesday March 20, 2019 at 2:00 PM from the chapel of Stutts Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Huckeba officiating.

Interment will follow in Caney Head United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will accept guests at Stutts Funeral Home Tuesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

Mr. Avery was born April 6, 1939 in Randolph County, AL to the late Ben Robert Avery and Lois Mapp Avery. He was a Baptist by faith.

He served his country in the US Navy as a machinist from 1957 until 1977. During his time in the Navy he was stationed aboard a number of vessels, among them the USS Seattle, USS Plymouth Rock, and USS Oriskany.

When the Oriskany was decommissioned by the Navy it was scuttled off the coast of Florida to serve as an artificial reef. Mr. Avery witnessed the destruction of the carrier on TV.

After his career in the Navy he became a farmer. He enjoyed growing vegetables in his garden, then being able to eat them for a home cooked meal. Sundays were reserved for “Family Day” lunches when everyone would gather around the table for food and fellowship.

Among his favorite pastimes were fishing and hunting. He also liked to get together with his friends for “Men’s Day” every Wednesday.

Survivors include two daughters, Helen Dixson (Mike) of Bowdon and Charlotte Belcher (Chuck) of Perry; daughter-in-law, Dana Avery of Ephesus; four grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Maxine Dunmire of Ohio; one brother, Ben Avery (Karen) of Ohio; and a number of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Avery; one son, Chuck Avery; and one brother, Robert Avery.
