Mrs. Martha Lewis

The beloved life of Martha Lewis began on December 23, 1934 in Heard County, Georgia to the late, Aaron and LuGennie Robinson Thornton, Sr.

“Beloved Servant:” Martha accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and joined Old Mt. Olive Baptist Church; then later joined Shiloh Baptist Church where she served faithfully as a dedicated servant of God.

She took many roles in the Church, serving as a member of the Choir, Usher, and member of the Kitchen Committee; and wherever she was needed in the Body of Christ.

She attended school at Ebenezer School in Franklin, Georgia; after which, she was employed by Flat Rock Manufacturing Company until she retired.

“Her Children Rise Up and Call Her Blessed:” Martha was an outstanding mother to six children as well as countless others whose lives she touched as she nurtured and prayed for them. The love she showered them with will forever live through her five children and grandchildren.

The earthy journey of Mrs. Martha Lewis came to an end on Wednesday, December 13, 2017. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Pierce Lewis, Sr.; daughter, Judy Barnes; four siblings, Johnnie B. Thornton, Sr., Gennie Mae Spearman, Aaron Thornton, JR., and Bessie L. Foster.

“Blessed Legacy:” Martha will be missed by many, but her legacy will live through her children, Lugenia Lewis, Pierce Lewis, Jr., both of Franklin, GA; Dwaine (Angerline) Lewis, Thomaston, GA; Gregory Lewis, Franklin, GA: and Arlisa Lewis, Atlanta, GA; 22 grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, and three great-great-great grandchildren; five sisters, Charlie Mae Sims, LaGrange, GA; Annie Ruth Wilkes and Artis Andrews, Franklin, GA; Mary “Honey” Thornton, Peachtree City, GA; and Ida V. Bohannon, Newnan, GA; brother-in-law, Ivey Foster, Sr.; two sisters-in-law, Sylver Jean Thornton, Franklin, GA; and Virginia Dowell, LaGrange, GA; one adopted son, Daniel Nelson, Twin City, GA; 47 foster grandchildren through her daughter, Arlisa Lewis whom she loved and nurtured as her own; she was also loved by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and many who called her “Mom.”

The funeral service will be Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Shiloh Baptist Church in Hogansville.

Lakes-Dunson-Roberston Funeral Home of Lagrange is in charge of the arrangements.
