She remained in New York and raised her family. She retired from Brunswick Hospital in Amityville, NY after more than 20 years of service, and rose to the position of Chief Therapeutic Dietician.

She was a woman of nature, and loved the outdoors. She often went barefoot and enjoyed the feeling of the ground between her toes. Gardening was her favorite pastime, and she was especially proud of her flowers and vegetables she grew each year.

She and her family owned a cottage in Canada, and she relished trips for rest and relaxation up north. She loved every kind of animal, and once nursed an injured squirrel back to health. She also enjoyed bird watching, and had many bird houses near her home.

She adored her family, and she had many relatives back in Georgia who stayed in contact with her. She especially looked forward to updates from her sister, Barbara Ann. She was not able to come home to Georgia each year, but always looked forward to family reunions.
