Mitchell Lee Newsome, 34, is in the Randolph County Jail without bond.

In a press release, Randolph County Sheriff David Cofield said dispatchers received a call on February 21 from a woman saying her six-week-old child had stopped breathing.

The infant, Madison Newsome, was transported to Wedowee Hospital, where hospital employees contacted deputies saying she may have sustained injuries from child abuse. She was transferred to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham where she died Thursday.

According to a search warrant filed last week, hospital workers said the child suffered from swelling on the brain and head trauma – injuries they believed were “not accidental.”

Mitchell Newsome was arrested at 10 a.m. Saturday at Roanoke’s Key West Inn and according to jail reports faces additional charges of first degree marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was out of jail on bond at the time from a drug possession charge, Cofield said.

Court documents filed on Feb. 24 state authorities believe Newsome “violently” shook the infant, causing her death due to a brain injury.
