(Centralhatchee) — The Heard County Special Olympics Long Distance Walking/Running Competition was held Tuesday, March 31st at Centralhatchee Park.

Opening ceremonies started at 10:00am and competition and awards were from 10:30am  – 12:30pm. A picnic Subway lunch was provided for all athletes.

Wylene Spearman, Local Coordinator of Special Olympics gave recognition to bus driver, Valerie Wilkes along with teacher assistants, Carol Denney and Sandy Covington. Mrs. Spearman stated, “ Everyone knows a good assistant is the backbone of your classroom.”

Also special recognition was given to Bonnie Vernon a Heard County Middle School teacher retiring this year after serving 30 years in the Heard County School System.

“Tuesday was a fun-filled day of sports competition at Centralhatchee Park as Heard County Special Olympian vied for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the Long Distance Walking and Running Events,” said Spearman.

“I was very pleased to have Buck Dunson return as a competitor for the 5k Walking Event. Todd Hendricks and Dennis Shaw had some new competition in the Alumni division. Throughout the day, several other athletes had outstanding performances. I am very proud of all of them.”

Many parents and grandparents attended as well as Centralhatchee Mayor Barbie Crockett.

Heard County Board of Education members Ashley Awbrey and Mike Crockett also attended the awards ceremony to congratulate each athlete on a job well done.

Miss West Georgia Outstanding Teen, Lindsay Orr and Miss Snowflake, Nikki Grier were present to hand out awards and to congratulate the athletes. – The Times~Journal
