Walk-off lifts Lady Braves over Wildcats

(Franklin, GA) — A walk-off double by sophomore Hannah Holden in the bottom of the eighth inning scored senior Brittany Scarborough and gave the home squad Lady Braves an impressive 6-5 win over Villa Rica Saturday afternoon.

The game was a back-and-forth affair throughout and a signature win for the young Lady Braves over a strong Class AAAAA opponent.

Holden had a big day with three hits, two RBI’s, and two stolen bases from the lead-off spot. She has been coach Matt Hornsby’s top hitter on the season with a .450 batting average and the game-winning double was her tenth of the season.

Taylor Paris and Alexus Crawford also had multiple hit efforts. The speedy Crawford stole three bases, scored twice, and is tied for the team high in steals with Holden at 13.

Scarborough had a base hit to start the extra inning rally and raised her season stolen base tally to 12.

Left fielder Marissa Garza continued her power surge with a two-run blast, her 8th homer of the season. Garza is hitting .333 on the season and also has a team-high 18 RBI’s. Lora Glover is second on the squad in RBI’s with 13.

On the mound Saturday, all three Lady Brave pitchers saw action with Katelyn Jiles earning her team high 5th win of the season. Junior Haley Bennett started and pitched four plus innings allowing just two earned runs before being relieved by Sydney Gay.

Freshman Lady Brave Emily Shelnutt

Freshman Emily Shelnutt got the start at first base in the place of Lora Glover who was out with an illness.

Coach Hornsby was pleased to see his girls get a big win over a solid Class AAAAA team.

“I just told the girls that I think that’s the first team that we’ve beaten all year that was more talented than us,” said Hornsby. “We had a rough stretch through the middle of the season but we have looked good in these last two wins.”

The Lady Braves face a full slate of home games this week at HHS beginning with a Region 5-AA doubleheader versus Jordan Monday afternoon (4:30PM) in Franklin.

The girls will then face non-region opponents in Lagrange (Tuesday 5:30 PM) and Central (Wednesday 5:30 PM) before hosting the Lamar County Trojans in a huge region contest Thursday.

It will also be senior night Thursday as the team honors its two seniors, Anna Cosper and Scarborough in the final regular season home game.
