Wyn Denney wins area title; 4 Braves advance to sectionals

(Bremen, GA) — The Braves varsity wrestling team traveled to Bremen High School Saturday for the GHSA Class AA Traditional Area 4 Wrestling Finals which featured individual competitors representing several different high schools from the West Georgia and metro Atlanta areas.

Eligible for the meet in addition to the Braves were Bremen, Callaway, Temple, BEST Academy, South Atlanta, Therrell, McNair, and Washington.

All four Brave competitors scored top four finishes to cash their individual tickets to this weekend’s GHSA Class AA State Sectional Meet that takes place once again at Bremen High School.

These four Braves will be looking to earn top six finishes this week at in order to earn spots on the biggest stage of all, the GHSA State Wrestling Championships at the Macon Centreplex February 13-15.

Leading the way for the Braves was senior Wyn Denney who earned a pinfall win over Callaway in his only match after advancing to the finals on byes.

The win pushes Denney’s perfect senior season record to 28-0 heading into sectionals as he begins the most serious road to that GHSA Class AA State Championships. Denney also took first place at the final Bowdon meet January 25. He is wrestling the state meet at 170 pounds.

The trio of Brave freshmen grapplers each earned second place medals at the Area meet to advance to this week’s sectional.

At 152 pounds, Nathan McClellan went 1-1 Saturday in Bremen to earn second place and he also had a strong finish at the Bowdon meet going 3-1 to earn a fourth place finish. McClellan wrestled well all season and heads to sectionals with an overall record of 22-11.

Freshmen Aidan Nelms (145) and Braeden “Big Man” Scoggins (285) each brought home second place area medals as well, with the highlight of the day coming as Scoggins pinned Callaway for his very first win of the season.

The Braves finished the area meet in fourth place as a team.

Head coach Jimmy Haynes was pleased to see all four of his guys make it through to the sectionals.

“Wyn Denney continues to be a hammer and I’m getting more and more excited as we move forward to see what he’s got a chance to do,” said Haynes following the Area meet.

“Nathan is turning the corner and he is getting better every day. Proud to see “Big Man” Braeden Scoggins get that win — he was down and at one time was on his back but he fought back to get a win for him. Aidan Nelms also continues to get better and better,” Haynes added.

“It’s just a special group of guys lighting the path for future Heard county wrestlers.”

The sectional meet this Friday and Saturday will feature schools from three different areas. Some of the other top wrestling schools that will join the mix in Bremen this week include Rockmart, Armuchee, Laney, Chattooga, Pepperell, and Josey.

In all, 25 high schools are eligible to compete at the Class 2A B Sectional this week as grapplers look to attain the important top six finish so they can advance to Macon.

Class AA Sectional matches at Bremen begin this Friday at 6:00 PM and will conclude with the finals Saturday morning beginning at 8:00 AM.
